The first tribe of people to cultivate Vanilla was the Totonac, who lived on the Gulf Coast of Mexico where the state of Veracruz is today. According to the Totonac, the tropical orchid that the Vanilla bean is derived from was born when Princess Xanat fled into the jungle with her mortal lover. The lovers were eventually captured and killed. The legend says in the places where the lover’s blood touched the ground, the vine of the tropical Vanilla orchid grew. Vanilla was later discovered by Spanish explorers, and eventually domesticated for mass production. Today we enjoy vanilla ice cream with our pie, vanilla cream in our coffee, and even bathing with a vanilla bath set.
